Our keynote speaker, Dr. Jeffrey Siegel, discussed the health risks of exposure to particulate matter and other indoor air pollutants, with a focus on children’s health. He shared his work on air quality, ventilation, sustainable buildings and energy systems, as well as learnings from COVID-19, to outline practical strategies to improve indoor air quality in educational settings.

Session 3: Climate Change Impacts on Indoor Learning Environments and Children’s Health

Watch this virtual event to learn about climate-related health risks impacting indoor environmental quality and children’s health and well-being. Speakers will address the health impacts of wildfire smoke on children’s health, protective measures to reduce wildfire smoke exposures, climate-related mental health impacts in Canada, as well as extreme heat within schools and child care settings, relevant policies and bylaws, and policy gaps relating to extreme heat.

Session 4: Effects of Air Pollutants on Children’s Brain Development

Watch this virtual event to learn about the effects of air pollutants on children’s brain development and learning. Dr. Lanphear will discuss the impacts of toxins on children’s health, including the impact of low dose exposure to toxins on brain development, learning, and behaviour. Dr. Carlsten will share his findings on air pollution-related health effects, with a focus on diesel exhaust and brain function.
